And after six days Jesus took Peter, James and John his brother, and led them up to a high mountain separate from the rest.
And Jesus was transfigured before them; his face shone as the sun, and his raiment was as white as the light.
And behold, there appeared to them Moses and Elijah talking with him.
Then Peter said to Jesus, "Lord, it is good for us to be here; if you will, let us make three booths; one for you, and one for Moses, and one for Elijah."
While Peter was speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them; and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, "This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased. Listen to him and obey him."
And when the disciples heard it, they fell on their faces and were very afraid.
Then Jesus came and touched them, and said, "Arise, and do not be afraid."
And when they had lifted up their eyes, they saw no one except Jesus.
And as they came down from the mountain, Jesus commanded them, saying, "Tell the vision to no one, until the Son of man has risen again from the dead."
Then his disciples asked him, "Why do the the scribes say that Elijah must come first [before the Christ]?"
And Jesus answered them, "Elijah truly does come first, and restores all things.
But I tell you that Elijah has come already, and they did not recognize him, but have done to him whatever they wished. Likewise also will the Son of man suffer from them."
Then the disciples understood that he spoke to them of John the Baptist [being the Spirit of Elijah]
