kingdom of heaven will be like ten virgins who took their lamps and went out to meet the bridegroom.
Five of them were wise, and five were foolish.
And those who were foolish took their lamps, but took no oil with them.
But the wise took oil in their flasks along with their lamps.
When the bridegroom was delayed, they all became drowsy and fell asleep.
And at midnight a cry was made, 'Behold, the bridegroom comes; go out to meet him.'
Then all those virgins arose, and trimmed their lamps.
And the foolish said to the wise, 'Give us some of your oil; for our lamps have gone out.'
But the wise answered, 'No we can't; for fear that there is not enough for us and you; rather you go to those who sell oil and buy some for yourselves.'
And while they went to buy, the bridegroom came. And those who were ready went in with him to the marriage; and the door was shut.
Afterwards the other virgins also came, saying, 'Lord, Lord, open the door for us to enter.'
But he answered and said, 'Truly I say to you, I do not know you.'1
Watch therefore, for you do not know either the day nor the hour in which the Son of man comes.
